CHALLENGE
Wastewater effluent from secondary treatment may require advanced treatment depending on the specific goals or use of the final treated wastewater. Suspended solids, dissolved organics or other compounds are removed further through processes such as membrane filtration or advanced oxidation processes (AOP). Advanced treatment processes require rigorous pre-treatment for optimal operation and extended service life.
SOLUTION
Real-time monitoring of organics (BOD and COD) before advanced treatment ensures pre-treatment operations are running as designed and provides an early warning of failure upstream to protect advanced treatment processes. Immediate corrective and preventative action can be taken to boost chemical dosage and enhance removal to ensure costly damage is avoided such as membrane clogging. UV-VIS spectral information can also be used to characterize organics allowing for further advanced treatment process adjustments and optimizations.
RESULTS
- Early warning of upstream failure
- Feedback to enhance primary/secondary treatment
- Avoid costly events
- Extend service life (membranes)
