HOW WE MEASURE
Real-time continuous monitoring can be achieved using spectrophotometric instruments as benzene has a unique absorbance profile and strongly absorbs UV light.
Real Tech’s innovative Benzene Sensor utilizes patent-pending and proprietary technologies to provide superior measurement performance across multiple wavelengths of light using UV LEDs. Many compounds absorb light in the UV-VIS spectrum, and how much the compounds absorb is directly proportional to their concentration. Compounds that may interfere with benzene measurement are compensated for using additional reference wavelengths. Real Tech’s simple and affordable real-time solutions are advancing water and wastewater management.

IMPORTANCE FOR DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER
Benzene is a major industrial chemical and is mainly used to make other chemicals. As an elementary petrochemical, it is naturally present in crude oil, gasoline and hydrocarbon fuels. Despite its widespread use in the industry, it is a known carcinogen, is highly toxic, and human exposure to it is a global health problem. Therefore, concentrations are highly regulated with a maximum allowable concentration of only 1 μg/L in drinking water.
Industrial effluents from many industries, including petrochemical and chemical, are often contaminated with benzene which can lead to groundwater and surface water contamination. Benzene must be carefully removed from wastewater prior to sewer or environmental discharge. Real-time monitoring enables early warning and event detection capabilities to assist with rapid detections of spikes in concentration and the ability to take action to improve removal.
