HOW WE MEASURE
Because ozone strongly absorbs UV light, monitoring its concentration is easy and seamless with absorbance-based instruments.
Real Tech’s innovative Ozone Sensor utilizes patent-pending and proprietary technologies to provide superior measurement performance across multiple wavelengths of light using UV LEDs. Many compounds absorb light in the UV-VIS spectrum, and how much the compounds absorb is directly proportional to their concentration. In applications where interfering compounds, such as organics and suspended solids, are present, a compensation wavelength in a region where ozone does not absorb is utilized for accurate measurements. Real Tech’s simple affordable real-time solutions are advancing water and wastewater management.
IMPORTANCE FOR DRINKING WATER AND WASTEWATER
As a strong oxidant ozone is one of the primary chemicals used for water disinfection. It is also widely used for oxidation of iron, manganese, sulfides and micropollutants, and removal of colour, taste and odour from water. In addition to these, ozone can be used in advanced oxidation processes (AOP) to generate hydroxyl radicals. About a third of drinking water treatment plants in the US use ozone for one of the applications mentioned above.
Monitoring ozone in the water can be critical for process control as in most applications its concentration needs to be tightly controlled, and both under- and overdosing can negatively impact treatment efficacy.
